動詞を意識して拾う
米公共放送 PBS News Hour の冒頭部分（※）を、動詞を拾うことを意識して繰り返し聞き、スクリプトを音読してみてください。
※ 一部のレッスンでは冒頭部分以外のトピックを含みます。
SV、SVC、SVOといった英文の構造をつかみやすくなり、リスニングの向上につながると思います。

各レッスンの「覚えたい語句・表現・用法など」もリスニングに役立ててください。
前置詞にも注意して
前置詞の中でも頻出の at、of、with 、それに接続詞や副詞としても使われる as が、ニュース動画の中ではとても聞き取りにくく感じられます。
ネイティブのスピーカーにとっては、これらの前置詞を使うのは「ごくあたりまえ」であるがゆえに、きわめてすばやく、省力化して発音されるのでしょう。
しかし、at、of、with、as を聞き取れるかどうか、あるいは、「そこに at、of、with、as が用いられるはずだ」という知識を持っていることは、ネイティブではないリスナーにとって、リスニングのうえで、きわめて重要なことだと思います。
繰り返し聞き、音読を
以下のニュース動画を繰り返し聞き、スクリプトを何度も音読することで、
- 動詞を意識し、
- よく使われるフレーズに慣れ、
- at、of、with、as やその他の前置詞に注意を払う、
ことができるようにしましょう。
ブログ管理人の私は、1日1レッスンをほぼ毎日、繰り返し聞き、音読しています。
言語学者の今井むつみ氏は『英語独習法』岩波新書（2020年）の中で、
- 「日本語母語話者が簡単に、片手間の勉強で、プロフェッショナルレベルの英語を習得することは無理である」（p. 14）
- 「努力をせず、時間もかけずに『プロとして通じる英語』が習得できる、という思い込みをまず捨てるべき」（同）
と主張しておられます。

The day’s other headlines start with Hurricane Milton, which has rapidly intensified to a Category 5 storm. Milton is on track to make landfall in the Tampa Bay area this week, bringing a life-threatening storm surge of up to 12 feet, a torrent of rain and high winds.
Authorities and residents there are racing to prepare. For many today, that meant filling sandbags. Others have already heeded evacuation orders. All this comes less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene battered the same area.
Governor Ron Desantis (Republican, Florida) :
We had a lot of debris left from Hurricane Helene on Florida’s Gulf Coast. That crates a huge hazard if you have a major hurricane hit in that area this week.
Geoff Benett:
Helene caused at least 230 deaths. About half of those fatalities were in North Carolina, where apocalyptic scenes still cover the western part of the state.
Today, the FEMA administrator once again responded to unsubstantiated claims that her agency isn’t doing enough to help the storm’s victims.
Deanne Criswell, FEMA Administrator:
Absolutely false. We have thousands of people on the ground, not just federal, but also our volunteers in the private sector.
And, frankly, that type of rhetoric is demoralizing to our staff that have left their families to come here and help the people of North Carolina. And we will be here as long as they’re needed.
Geoff Benett:
Shortly after that press conference, Criswell traveled to Florida, where she met with state and local officials ahead of Hurricane Milton.

And 2023 was the driest year for the world’s rivers in more than three decades. That’s according to a new report by the UN’s weather agency.
Prolonged droughts have drained water levels in some areas to all-time lows, like here in the Amazon.
The report also noted that glaciers, which feed many of the world’s rivers, suffered the largest loss of mass in half-a-century last year.
The agency’s director said that rising global temperatures are partly to blame and called the state of water – quote – “the canary in the coal mine of climate change.”

We start the day’s other headlines with the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize, which was awarded to Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese group of survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The 1945 atomic bombings by US forces were the first and only nuclear attacks in history.
In Japan, survivors are known as HIbakusha, and many have dedicated their lives to abolishing nuclear weapons.
Their win today was, in a way, a warning. The chair of the Nobel Committee said – quote – “In a world ridden with conflicts, we wanted to highlight the importance of strengthening the nuclear taboo.”
The winners were shocked when they heard the news. The organization’s co-chair said their stories matter now more than ever before.

What I seek the most is peace, of course.
The images of the children in Gaza covered with blood held by their parents remind me of Japan 80 years ago. Children lost their fathers in the war and lost their mothers with the nuclear bomb. They became orphans.

Palestinian officials say the war in Gaza has killed more than 42,000 people, the majority women and children.
And Russian President Vladimir Putin recently announced a shift in his country’s nuclear policy. That was seen as a warning to the West against allowing Ukraine to strike Russia with long-range weapons.
